Biographical Information

Maria specializes in aviation law and commercial law.  She began her legal career in 1994 as an associate at a large law firm in Buenos Aires, where she represented clients in government contracting, secured lending, mergers and acquisitions and corporate law matters.  In 1999, Maria became Senior Legal Counsel at a former Buenos Aires-based passenger airline carrier, where she managed a wide range of legal matters affecting the carrier and its activity in the airline industry, including the negotiation of aircraft and equipment purchase and leasing agreements with U.S. and U.K. manufacturers.  Along with foreign external counsel and insurers, Maria headed the legal proceedings following the widely-publicized 1999 plane crash in Buenos Aires—Argentina’s worst aircraft tragedy.  Her work included a frustrated attempt to restructure the company’s debt and, eventually, she oversaw the company’s bankruptcy.

From June 2001 to August 2011, Maria served as Senior Legal Officer for the aviation division of Grupo Corporación América.  In this position, she oversaw the company’s successful bid for the Guayaquil International Airport (Ecuador) and managed several multiparty M&A transactions.

In June 2003, Maria transitioned to the Group’s duty-free division, Interbaires, which was later sold to Dufry AG.  At Interbaires, she headed legal matters for Argentina, Uruguay and Ecuador and served as the only woman member of the Board of Directors.  As Senior Legal Counsel, María oversaw governance and compliance, served as government affairs liaison, negotiated and advised on public and private agreements, and supervised outside counsel on all transactional and litigation matters.

María has been recognized by Expert’s Guide to Women in Business, Expert’s Guide Aviation Lawyer and Who’s Who Legal.  She is a member of the International Law Society, the Institute of International Economic Law, the Securities and Financial Law Organization and the Anti-corruption and Anti-Money Laundering Society, among various other professional associations relevant to her practice.
